West Virginia University, through a partnership with Gatlin Education Services, offers online career training services for managers who want to learn the best techniques of project management. This course prepares students for the Project Management Professionals Certification Test.

Computer Requirements
This course can be taken from either a Mac or a PC. There are no specific computer requirements other than an Internet connection and email capabilities.

Background
Project management is growing exponentially. It is now used in virtually all industries, including: health care, government, education and banking. Projects are how organizations downsize and flatten to improve productivity. As midlevel management positions are reduced, project managers fill the void. Expertise in project management is a source of security, prosperity and power to the survivors.

Course Goal
The Project Management Program is designed for students with personal as well as professional goals. Project Management can be used for building a house, getting married, or moving to a new location. For professionals, this program is designed for those seeking Project Management Professionals (PMP) certification or for other business professionals seeking to improve their professional repertoire with knowledge of project management. This course covers a good overview, it prepares the student for the PMP Certification Test, and provides the required 35 contact hours needed to take the PMP certification test. The Project Management Institute offers the PMP Certification Test.

Course Objectives
By completing the Project Management course, students will understand how to:

  • Improve productivity.
  • Effectively organize projects.
  • Understand the project life cycle.
  • Master the basic project management skills.
  • Link realistic objectives to stakeholder needs.
  • Establish dependable monitoring techniques.
  • Estimate project costs.
  • Agree on realistic time schedules.
  • Successfully pass the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam.

Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course offered for 40 hours. The student can register at any time during the year. Cost is $1,495 per student. A certificate for course completion will be issued.

Prerequisite(s)
There are no specific requirements for this course; however, if you plan to take the PMP Exam, you will need a Bachelor's degree and 4500 hours of project management experience in addition to this course, or a High School Diploma or GED and 7500 hours of project management experience in addition to this course.

Materials Included are Managing Projects in Organizations, by J. Davidson Frame, and PMP Exam Prep, by Rita Mulcahy.

Refund Policy
Any cancellation and refund request must be submitted in writing by the student to WVU Extended Learning. A $50 processing fee will be charged to the student for a cancellation requested before materials (books) are mailed to the student. If the student cancels within ten days after the materials are mailed to the student, then a $100 processing fee will be charged, provided the student returns the materials, within five days of the written request, in their original condition. If the materials are not returned within the specified period of time or are not in their original condition, then a $500 processing fee will be charged to the student. If the student cancels any time between eleven and thirty days after the materials ae mailed to the student, then a $300 processing fee will be charged, provided the student returns the materials, within 5 days of the written request, in their original condition. If the materials are not returned within the specified period of time or are not in their original condition, then a $500 processing fee will be charged to the student. No other refunds will be considered.
