
West Virginia University, through a partnership with Gatlin Education Services, offers online career training services for adults who want to attain the skills needed for many in-demand professions such as certified bookkeeper.
Computer Requirements
This course can be taken on either a PC or a Mac.
Microsoft Word and Excel are required.
Materials
The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) provides the six workbooks that are required for this program.
Background
This online course for professional bookkeepers leads to national certification with the AIPB. The AIPB certification is a high professional standard and the only national standard for bookkeepers. Becoming a Certified Bookkeeper (CB) can increase earning potential, enhance professional status, and offer a decisive edge in any job market. This course was created by the AIPB to prepare experienced bookkeepers for the certification exam at any Prometric Test Center.
Course Goal
This course is designed for experienced bookkeepers who want to prepare for national certification. In order to sit for the AIPB Certification exam, persons must be able to submit proof of at least two years full-time or 3,000 hours part-time experience.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to do the following:
- Describe the benefits, eligibility requirements, code of ethics, and maintenance requirements for the Certified Bookkeeper.
- Apply the concepts of accrual accounting to transactions that span fiscal periods.
- Trace the effect of accrual and deferral transactions to financial statements.
- Apply accounting concepts and the basic tools of financial analysis in identifying and correcting errors.
- Apply accounting principles in reconciling bank accounts.
- Apply accounting concepts in preparing payroll transactions, from paying wages to depositing and reporting taxes.
- Apply accounting concepts to depreciation transactions including various methods of calculating depreciation for book and tax purposes.
- Apply accounting concepts to valuing inventory, recording costs, making entries, and reporting inventory on financial statements.
- Help your company or client use basic internal controls to prevent theft, embezzlement or check and credit card fraud by employees, customers or vendors.
Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course offered for 80 hours. The student can register at any time during the year. Cost is $1,795 per student. A certificate for course completion will be issued.

Refund Policy
Any cancellation and refund request must be submitted in writing by the student to WVU Extended Learning. A $50 processing fee will be charged to the student for a cancellation requested before materials (books) are mailed to the student. If the student cancels within ten days after the materials are mailed to the student, then a $100 processing fee will be charged, provided the student returns the materials, within five days of the written request, in their original condition. If the materials are not returned within the specified period of time or are not in their original condition, then a $500 processing fee will be charged to the student. If the student cancels any time between eleven and thirty days after the materials ae mailed to the student, then a $300 processing fee will be charged, provided the student returns the materials, within 5 days of the written request, in their original condition. If the materials are not returned within the specified period of time or are not in their original condition, then a $500 processing fee will be charged to the student. No other refunds will be considered.
