
Introduction
This webcast workshop was developed using consensus expert opinions about basic information that school administrators should have to increase their awareness of the need for institutional planning and preparedness. The workshop refers participants to other training and resources that provide in-depth information on major topic areas or for training targeted to specific groups such as K-12 school principals.
Objectives
Course Goal
The goal of the workshop is to support the Department of Homeland Security’s program
for improving the planning and preparedness capabilities of educational institutions by
helping school administrators understand the principles of incident readiness and
providing them with examples, tools, and resources for Homeland Security strategies.
Course Objectives
By completing this course, the student will learn to:
- Identify the major roles of local, state, and federal government in Homeland Security planning and response.
- Describe the role of educational institutions in Homeland Security planning and response.
- Identify the need for threat and vulnerability assessments for schools.
- Identify planning and preparedness management issues that are common to school districts.
- Describe a Crisis Communications Management Plan and its importance in reaching the multiple constituencies of K-12 schools.
- Identify the types of training required for members of the school response community and crisis management team.
- Identify training providers, funding streams, and availability of training to meet school needs.
- Identify recommended priorities for crisis preparedness.
Overview
Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course with an average completion time of 2 hours. All training and course materials are FREE for a limited time only and are funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Training and Exercise Integration Secretariat (TEI).

Requirements
Prerequisite(s)
No prerequisite(s) or course materials are required for the course. This course would be of interest to those that hold administrative leadership positions at K-12 schools or play a part in developing the school’s crisis preparedness plan.
Computer Requirements
Basic computer skills required (i.e. turning on your computer, navigating to websites, etc.). The course is user-friendly with a WVU eCampus Tutorial to guide the student, but support is available if needed.
