
Introduction
The preparation for dealing with the effects of major incidents in the United States is a difficult and complex task. Hospitals perform a special and vital role in response during disasters, terrorist attacks, and other incidents. In order to prepare, hospitals must take an active role in the planning and preparation phases of emergency management in their communities.
Objectives
Course Goal
The goal of this online course is to present a basic overview of information about hospital management planning. Hospital preparation for major events using an “all-hazards” approach will also improve readiness for major disasters and incidents that are more common.
Course Objectives
By completing this course, the student will learn to:
- Recognize the need for planning.
- Identify sources of guidance when planning for a hospital emergency management plan.
- Describe the business aspects of hospital emergency planning.
- Recognize key personnel in hospital emergency management planning.
- Describe the key emergency response elements of mitigation and preparation.
- Describe the key emergency management elements of response and recovery.
- Describe additional resources available to support hospital emergency management.
- Describe additional resources available for training.

This is a non-credit course with an average completion time of 4 hours. All training and course materials are FREE for a limited time only and are funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Training and Exercise Integration Secretariat (TEI).

No prerequisite(s) or course materials are required for the course. This course would be of interest to Healthcare personnel and Public Health officials.
Computer Requirements
Basic computer skills required (i.e. turning on your computer, navigating to websites, etc.). The course is user-friendly with a WVU eCampus Tutorial to guide the student, but support is available if needed.
