The RN to BSN nursing degree is delivered entirely online. New cohorts begin fall, spring, and summer semesters, with limited enrollment during the spring and summer terms. A total of 28 credit hours of nursing coursework are required, and students can apply to have 6 hours waived via submission of a portfolio highlighting clinical experience.
- The online RN-BSN program is designed for completion in three semesters of full-time study.
- Graduates of diploma and associate degree nursing programs have the opportunity to complete requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in a cost-effective, efficient educational model in the RN-BSN program. The RN-MSN program is offered to graduates of associate degree nursing programs.
- A portfolio and credit by examination process offers the opportunity for experienced RNs to challenge senior level community health courses, if faculty determine that prior clinical experiences support the challenge or portfolio process.

Admission Requirements
Registered nurses are admitted directly to the School of Nursing. Acceptance and placement in the program are dependent upon the individual’s academic record and upon the number of spaces available. An unrestricted license to practice nursing and a grade point average of 2.5 or better on all college work attempted are required to be eligible for consideration.
All registered nurses will transfer 50 hours of undifferentiated nursing credit. All RN to BSN students will be required to meet WVU’s General Education Curriculum (GEC). Additionally, if a student already holds a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, only a course in statistics will be required to fulfill the GEC requirements.
Course Content
Students will take courses focusing on areas such as ethics in nursing, community health, health assessment, and the concepts and principles of professional nursing. The capstone course, Evidence Based Practice, focuses on understanding the concepts inherent in evidence based nursing practice, including finding relevant evidence for practice through the use of technology, critically appraising knowledge for clinical decision making, using evidence based practice tools including models and guidelines, dissemination of evidence, and motivating a change to evidence based practice in individuals and organizations. Students will analyze and evaluate theories, research, guidelines, databases, and models that illustrate these concepts.
