Advertising Minor

The P.I. Reed School of Journalism announces a new online minor in advertising. Over 200,000 Americans work in the advertising industry. More the 50,000 are executives and managers at advertising agencies; over 100,000 work in corporate advertising functions; and more than 50,000 work in media advertising functions, marketing research, or serve suppliers to the field.

The advertising industry looks to fill its entry-level positions with those committed and trained in the field, but very few colleges and universities offer concentrations in advertising at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Often, outstanding students majoring in fields such as English, Marketing, Business Administration, Psychology, Communications, Sociology, and History are recruited. The online advertising minor can prepare students from any discipline to enter the field.

The advertising minor requires the following five courses:

JRL 101: Introduction to Mass Communication
3 hours Can be taken on campus or online
ADV 403 - Media Analysis
3 hours ADV 403 must be taken online during summer session
ADV 215: Principles of Advertising
3 hours Can be taken on campus or online
Summer start dates of May 21 and July 1
ADV 459 - Campaigns
3 hours Prerequisites: ADV 315, 403
PR 410 must be taken online during summer session
ADV 315 - Advertising Copywriting
  Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215
ADV 315 must be taken online during summer session

To earn a minor in Advertising a student must earn a grade of C or better in each of the five courses.

The Advertising minor is not available to any student enrolled in the P.I. Reed School of Journalism.

Students who double-minor in Advertising and Public Relations may choose an additional course from the School’s online and 200-level open enrollment courses in place of JRL 101 (which they will have already taken for the PR minor.)

Students can complete the minor with the two lower division courses during the school year and the online courses in one summer. Students completing the entire minor online can expect to complete it in two summers.

All courses are taught completely online via eCampus. Students need to plan on logging into eCampus on daily during the week, but can do so at the time of their own choosing. Students should budget the same amount of time for an online class as they do for classroom classes.
